Permission Comes First
Private land pickup checks start with permission. A car on a drive, yard, farm track, business unit, garage forecourt or shared car park may not be on public road, but the collector still needs the right person to approve access and release the vehicle.
If you own or control the land, that is simple. If the car is at a relative's house, rented property, workplace, repairer or storage yard, make sure the person in charge knows collection is booked. A recovery driver should not have to negotiate access on arrival.
Gates, Codes And Opening Hours
Private land often has a physical access point: a gate, barrier, chain, shutter, fob entrance or coded yard. Give those details before the truck sets off. If someone must open up, give their name and phone number, and make sure they will be there during the pickup window.
Opening hours matter too. Garages, farms and business yards may close earlier than expected. Apartment parking may need a resident fob. A shared industrial estate may have a separate gate from the address shown online. These are small details until the driver is outside and cannot get in.
Ground Conditions Affect Loading
A private space can be wide but still awkward. Gravel, mud, grass, potholes, slopes and broken concrete can all affect how a non-runner moves. If the car has flat tyres or seized brakes, poor ground makes the job more difficult.
Describe the surface honestly. If the car is on soft ground after rain, say so. If a truck cannot get close without crossing grass or a weak surface, include that. Access is not only about width. It is also about whether the ground can support safe recovery.
Check The Route From Entrance To Car
Walk from the entrance to the vehicle. Look for low branches, narrow turns, parked machinery, trailers, bins, pallets, walls and other cars. Photograph the route, especially if the driver will not be able to see the vehicle from the road.

Do not assume private land means unlimited room. Many yards are full of equipment, stock, staff vehicles or stored cars. A non-runner that will not steer can be harder to handle there than on a clear roadside.
Keep The Handover Straight
Before pickup, remove belongings and agree who is meeting the driver. If the landowner or garage is releasing the vehicle for you, make sure they know the agreed buyer and collection time. Keep a record of the quote and any handover paperwork.
